The Science and Art of Using Telescopes (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)Amateur astronomers have to start somewhere. Most begin by buying a modest astronomical telescope and getting to know the night sky. After a while, many want to move on to the next stage, but this can be problematic. The magazines advertise a mass of commercially-made equipment – some of it very expensive – which can represent a major financial outlay. The trick is to choose the right equipment, and then use it to its fullest extent.
Observing Skills: The Science and Art of using Astronomical Telescopes provides the required information. First, it explains how to get the best from entry-level equipment (that upgrade may not even be needed for a year or two!). Second, it explains how to select equipment that is at the ‘next level’, and describes how use more advanced telescopes and accessories.
The book is organized according to observational targets, and although it concentrates mainly on visual observing, it concludes with a section on imaging and the equipment currently available – from regular digital cameras, through webcams, to specialized chilled-chip CCD cameras.
Observing Skills: The Science and Art of using Astronomical Telescopes is the perfect follow-up to Moore and Watson: Astronomy with a Budget Telescope and Tonkin: AstroFAQs . It neatly fills the gap between these introductory books and the more advanced books in Springer’s Practical Astronomy list.
Viewing the Universe in StereovisionAmerican author Tammy Plotner has teamed up with Finnish image-processing genius Jukka Metsavainio to produce this fun and informative book. Unlike a simple book of astronomical photographs, the images are rendered in stereovision, using a system that requires no special tools or 3D glasses but allows the viewer to see the full color photographs in breathtaking 3D perspective.
Included are over 50 unique stereo full-color images that take you on an outward journey, from Earth, through the solar system, and deep into the expanding cosmos. In addition to seeing the fantastic stereographs of planets, star clusters, nebula, and galaxies, you will read the most current scientific information on each object. And you will be encouraged to return again and again to each photograph, to "see" more. With practice, you should begin to visualize how these astronomical objects would look if you could only see them in true stereo!
This book is absolutely unique. Unlike those pictures that require red and blue glasses to view them, this stunningly simple concept – developed by the Victorians in England over 150 years ago – means that the paired stereo photographs will appear totally normal until viewed under certain conditions. Then the reader’s vision merges each pair into a breathtaking full-color astronomical image in three-dimensional stereo!
Using only the most current scientific information, the astronomical basics of each object are described, with careful attention given to the astronomy and physics that will call the reader back to the photograph over and over, to more closely compare what we now know with what they can see in the stereograph. The book contains only the best astrophotography available today, as carried out by the world's foremost imagers. They include HST (Hubble Space Telescope) targets but go way beyond the familiar deep-space objects that are commonly found in illustrated works. There are fresh, one-of-a-kind looks into some of the most mysterious and incredible objects our universe has to offer. Each image is selected for its unique scientific background and beauty. Sit back and buckle your seat belt... this book is about to take you on the ride of your life…
